Urban Land Institute 2013 Award of Distinction for Public Impact

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) in Austin announced the winners for the Awards of Distinction for 2013 on February 26, 2014.

The Royal Blue Grocery Parklet was awarded as the project with the greatest public impact. The award winning design for this Congress Avenue treasure was created by our friends at Studio DWG in collaboration with our team at BIG RED DOG Engineering.

Fashioned after pocket parks made popular in San Francisco, the Parklet occupies two angled parking spaces along Congress Avenue between 6th & 7th Streets in front of Royal Blue Grocery, and features a deck seating area and large planter elements. The Parklet provides seating and respite from the busy sidewalk and allows Royal Blue customers a place to relax and enjoy their purchases. The Parklet has been extremely popular since it’s opening over a year ago and is widely used by downtown residents, employees and visitors.

The Awards recognize projects in three categories for their impact on Building Healthy Places, a major ULI national initiative. Read more about the award on the ULI website.
