City of Houston Permit Center Permitting Dashboard

Almost all permitting for Commercial, Residential, and Public Works Projects within the City of Houston full-purpose jurisdiction takes place at the City of Houston’s Permit Center located at 1002 Washington Avenue (only about a 5 minute drive from BRD’s Houston office).  For a first-time visitor, the permit center can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating, but the City of Houston has done its best to provide a streamlined process for obtaining permits.  We must remember Houston is one of the 5 largest metropolitans in the Country and just in the past month has already received over 1,600 commercial development permit applications.

The services provided at the Permit Center are extensive and are worthier of a white paper to dissect than a blog post.  However, when it comes to estimating the timelines for permitting efforts through the COH, there is one tool that we have found to be extremely useful which shows real time data on all plan reviews currently taking place.

The Houston Permitting Center Submitted Plans Dashboard (Link below) shows live data on the number of plans currently under review, average review cycle times, average review cycles needed prior to permit issuance, and much more all broken down by commercial and residential projects as well as the projects estimated valuation.  Of course, all this data is based on the Permit Center’s workload (number of new applications) as well as their current staffing levels so having a tool that allows us to monitor this is invaluable.
