BIG RED DOG interns play an integral part in our company and its success, but becoming a full-time team member is where the success actually begins.
Students from many universities throughout Texas and around the country start their careers in our offices located in Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Sugar Land. Jump starting their engineering careers in our offices as interns can play a major role in their career and professional development once they graduate.
Megan Amitrano, a Graduate Civil Engineer with our Commercial Services Team in San Antonio, began her career with us in the summer of 2016 as an intern.
“Having interned with BIG RED DOG, I have been given an assuring sense of confidence to join the professional community as an E.I.T., knowing that I represent a strong, unique firm that leads our industry in innovation and customer service,” said Amitrano, a UTSA graduate. “I am very proud to now work alongside the same people who had mentored me as a Little Red Dog.”
For Graduate Civil Engineer, Vincent Geracci, who started his internship in our Austin office in May 2017, BIG RED DOG raised his standards for what to expect out of an employer.
“The level of opportunity and training available at BIG RED DOG, with its young and innovative culture was very appealing to me. Interning at BIG RED DOG changed what I was looking for in an employer. I was no longer just looking for a good job upon graduation, I was looking for a company that rewarded hard work, built up young leaders, and provided an atmosphere that encouraged and foster collaboration,” said Geracci, a UT Austin graduate. “Additionally, I learned a lot of great hard and soft skills, such as plan standards, design processes, and communication tools. I also had the opportunity to build relationships with city review staff that has benefited me in my full-time career at BIG RED DOG.”
Our interns have the opportunity to explore their areas of interests, develop skills, gain exposure to different aspects of engineering, and learn from experienced engineers.
“As an intern I put together site plan applications, engineering reports, cost estimates, processed corrections, and much more. I aided my team in whatever tasks and projects they needed help with,” said Alexa Turney, Graduate Engineer. “BIG RED DOG introduced me to many peers and mentors who have helped guide me through my career. BIG RED DOG has also given me many tools to expand my engineering knowledge and professional development.”
Because of the experience Esteban Gonzalez gained as an intern in our Austin office, he was able to find a home with the Commercial Services team at BIG RED DOG once he graduated from the University of Texas.
“Since the company is continuously growing, BIG RED DOG gives you more responsibility than other companies normally would. Thanks to that, I am now dealing with clients one on one, and taking the lead role on individual projects,” said Esteban. “That is something that I would have never seen myself doing in less than a year from starting at the company.”
The experiences our interns gain while at BIG RED DOG are invaluable, as they are given a glimpse of what it’s like to be a full-time BIG RED DOG team member. Performing well in this role can lead to a full-time offer after graduation.
“Since graduating in December, BIG RED DOG has been the first step in my career and I believe by joining the BIG RED DOG team I am setting myself up for a very successful career,” said Graduate Engineer, Sam Donnelly, who works in our Houston office. “BIG RED DOG was the first internship that really challenged me to become better at all aspects of the business. By introducing me to as many of the processes as possible during my internship, it really made me appreciate how the company operates and enticed me to stay with the company when I graduated.”
