Today on the Intern Spotlight we’ll meet Ava Lamb, a Structural Engineering intern in the Austin office.
Hey, Ava! Where are you from and where did you go to school? I was raised in Greenville, SC and found my college home in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!). I majored in Civil Engineering and minored in Spanish there before moving to Austin with my husband, John, to pursue a graduate degree in Structural Engineering at UT.
Awesome. How did you hear about BIG RED DOG and what made you want to intern with us? I saw a job posting for the internship and BRD’s website caught my attention. From there, the more I learned about the company’s smart, modern, involved structure and forward-thinking plans, the more I wanted to be a part of it.
What has been most surprising about your internship or working for BRD so far? The sense of and desire for unity in the company. Even the interns are brought up to speed with the goings-on of BRD. Everyone is encouraged to be open and team-oriented, no matter how far away you sit from each other. Oh, and the ridiculous amount of gum stashed in the gum drawer.
You’re right, the gum drawer is quite ridiculous. Do you have any pets? Yes! Our 4.5 month old rescue puppy, Bear. She has quickly proven herself to be an awesome little adventure buddy to explore Austin with and a joy to have around.
What about travel? Do you have a favorite trip that you’ve taken recently? It’s a tough choice to make, but I’m going to go with Banff, Canada – it’s absolutely gorgeous! It is no surprise that it contains one of the most photographed lakes in the world. Denali National Park in Alaska is a very very close second.
What advice do you have to future interns? Dive right in and don’t be afraid to ask questions! There’s a lot to learn and luckily at BRD there are a lot of willing teachers. Not every company is willing to invest so much in their interns- take advantage of that!
Thanks for your time, Ava! Good luck with the rest of your internship.
