At BIG RED DOG, we recognize that our talented employees make up the driving force that pushes us forward. Our team members exhibit extraordinary effort day in and day out. We love sharing more about them with the clients they serve every day. This week’s staff spotlight introduces you to Dane Edwards, a BRD Austin Project Designer who joined our team in January of 2015.
Where are you originally from?
I grew up in Jersey Village, a suburban town just NW of Houston, TX.
Tell us something really interesting about you.
I rode my bicycle to Alaska over the summer of 2008. I was a student at UT and got involved with the non-profit, “The Texas 4000 for Cancer”. My 70 day route took me through North Texas, the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the Canadian Rockies, the Yukon and on into Anchorage Alaska. It was an incredible way to spend the summer and I’d encourage anyone to learn more about the organization.
Everyone at BIG RED DOG has a story about why they joined the team. What’s yours?
Big Red Dog has a great culture and our client base is cutting edge. I could feel and see the difference when I sat in for an interview – the employees were happy, the plans were sound and the opportunities for growth were apparent.
What drew you to the engineering field?
I grew up with a passion for drawing. After trying out several careers – including Archaeology and Healthcare – I enrolled in a CAD program and found that the work fit well with my talents.
What was your first job?
My first job was at a Middle School the summer after my 8th grade year – distributing and stamping new text books, assembling/distributing furniture, answer phones etc.
Who or what inspires you? Music and Nature, my Fiance and friends, parents and grandparents.
Where’s your favorite place to eat in Austin?
That’s a tough one. My top three places are…Madam Mams, The Clay Pit and Julio’s.
What do you like to do in your free time?
What a question! Anything outdoors – trail jogging, swimming, gardening, hiking and fishing are fairly common past times. Playing the bass with my band or picking the guitar with friends around the bonfire can’t be beat.
What’s your favorite news source?
Do you have any pets?
“Oscar” is my step-dog. He’s 10 and always up to play.
Describe your ideal vacation.
Sailing a double mast schooner around the world – fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving ‘til I’m sick of it.
What would be impossible for you to give up?
Breakfast Tacos and Coffee.
Who is your favorite sports team?
I couldn’t name one active player, but I’m true to my alma mater – The Texas Longhorns.
Best vacation ever?
My fiancé and I backpacked in Nicaragua and Panama for 3 months. The highlight of the trip was spending three weeks on the small island of Isle de Maiz. We had inexpensive but comfortable accommodations, a “front yard reef” to snorkel, dive and spear fish on and some great company to share it all with.
Last book I read?
John Muir – “My First Summer in the Sierras”
