Once again, it’s time to reflect on one of our outstanding team members who make our organization strong, creative, and supremely capable. This time, we are focusing on James Roman, P.E., our Education Services Market Leader in the BIG RED DOG Houston office.
Where are you originally from? Copperas Cove, Texas
Tell us something really interesting about you. I’ve climbed a handful of 14er’s in Colorado. Most recently, I climbed Mount Eolus, but I was too chicken to walk across the catwalk to the top of the peak. I regret that and plan to avenge myself one day.
Everyone at BIG RED DOG has a story about why they joined the team. What’s yours? I joined BRD because I wanted to be part of a team that has ambitious goals, that’s not content with the status quo. I think of myself as a go-getter and want to be surrounded by go-getters.
What drew you to the engineering field? Designing and creating things that have a very direct impact in people’s lives is cool to me.
What was your first job? Growing up, we lived out in the country, and my dad paid me and my siblings to pick up rocks, cut down trees, and pull up stumps. $5 for a bucket of rocks was pretty good to a 10-year-old.
Who or what inspires you? I get inspired by a lot of different things. Music, movies, people. My mom inspires me. She’s awesome.
Where’s your favorite place to eat in Houston? There’s too many to pick a favorite!
Where’s your favorite place to go/hang out in Houston (whichever city you live in)? My go-to spot is Cedar Creek on 20th Street.
What do you like to do in your free time? Relax, play tennis and golf, take my dogs to the dog park, hang out with my wife and friends.
What’s your favorite news source? I mix it up.
Do you have any pets? Two dogs: A 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Jack and a 2 year old Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix named Jovie.
What would be impossible for you to give up? Shiner and Fajitas.
Who is your favorite sports team? Fightin’ Texas Aggies! Also, the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Red Sox.
Best vacation ever? In 2014, my wife and I took a 2-week road trip from Houston to San Diego that was pretty incredible. We camped at the Grand Canyon, walked across the Hoover Dam, saw a couple cool shows in Vegas, camped out in Yosemite NP, drove through a giant Sequoia Tree in northern California, barked back at the Sea Lions on Pier 39 in San Fran, walked the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Blvd., and monkey’d around at the San Diego Zoo. It was an awesome trip.
Last book I read? Do audio books count? If so, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. My wife LOVES the HP books. We’ve watched all the movies multiple times. She always says the books are way better, so I’m slowly “reading” the books. So far, I’m not convinced.
