At BIG RED DOG, we are proud to spotlight our team members that make our organization strong, creative, and supremely capable. This edition of our staff spotlight series introduces us to Nick Corbett, P.E., a Project Engineer based in our Austin office. Learn more about Nick below!
Hi Nick. Where are you from and where did you go to school? I’m from Charleston, SC and I graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina.
What was the last book you read? A Chilton’s Repair Manual for a 1989-96 Toyota 4Runner.
Sounds fascinating! Who or what inspires you? My wife Jo. She is so supportive and patient with our friends and loved ones, especially me. When friends need advice or someone to talk to, they all call, “Mama Jo”.
What’s your favorite place to eat in your hometown? Bowen’s Island Restaurant. You can watch the fishermen bring in the fish, oysters, and crabs you will soon be eating.
Describe your ideal vacation. I love to travel and eat local foods from anywhere and everywhere. There is one thing in common with all cultures in the world. Food. When I travel, I want to eat the local cuisines and if I have the chance, with a local.
What would be impossible for you to give up? Music. I’ve been playing drums since I was nine years old. I do have preferred genres, but I need some sort of music
Tell us something interesting about yourself. I performed in the 2010 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes were the only representatives from the US to perform that year.
Everyone at BIG RED DOG has a story about why they joined the team. What’s yours? My wife started last September as the Austin Office Manager. After several trips around town and her saying, “That’s one of ours.” to every other project under construction, I knew I had to be part of the BRD team.
What drew you to the engineering field? While I do enjoy all the aspects of your typical “driven by the challenge” answer, the engineering degree at my school didn’t require a foreign language credit.
What do you like to do in your free time? As my wife says, I have too many hobbies. I enjoy the quote, “A jack of all trades is a master of none but often times better that a master of one.” I very much enjoy woodworking. I am limited by my workspace but I have made several different styles of boxes. My next woodworking project will be a bar cabinet. For exercise, I do Crossfit. As an engineer, I am obsessed with the data that I get from every workout. I record all workouts and lifts so I can beat it the next time.
Thanks for your time, Nick. We’re happy that you are part of the team!
