Internships are essential experiences for college students seeking professional growth in their chosen field. They provide students the opportunity to work for an established company while gaining access to real-world knowledge and skills that cannot be taught in a textbook. Like all our teams, our San Antonio office offers future engineers of the world the opportunity to intern and learn from local pros. Joel Nino, one of our San Antonio interns, provided an inside look at his intern experience through the years.
“For some, I may not have been considered the ideal candidate for an internship since I wasn’t very experienced, but Chris and Russell decided to give me a chance,” Joel explained. “They have been so patient and helpful in helping me learn and grow.”
Three years later, Joel is still continuing to grow with the BIG RED DOG team in San Antonio while earning his degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
“The most fun part about being an intern at BIG RED DOG has been the people I work with and the overall work environment. Everyone there has always been very welcoming and willing to help.”
While being an intern is an exciting experience, it requires students to have excellent time management skills in order to balance the demands of work and school into one cohesive schedule. Joel knows these hurdles well, but continues to work through them to reach his end goal.
“The most challenging part of being an intern is dividing my time between work and school. I would like to spend more time in the office and help my team, but I have to continue to place my focus on my schoolwork so I can soon join the team full time.”
Joel is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Science and Civil Engineering (BSCE) at UTSA and anticipates graduating December 2016. After graduating, Joel plans to continue working with BIG RED DOG’s San Antonio team and obtain his Engineering in Training (EIT) certification.
“BIG RED DOG is not just a job and internship. It has become my second family,” he said. “I am so grateful and proud to be able to work for this team and the people that make it the great company that it is today. It’s very fulfilling to be part of such a great organization.”
