Here’s Why We’re Excited for SXSW 2019

March 7, 2019 by Kelly Daacon

SXSW 2019South By Southwest (SXSW) was founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas and celebrates the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries. SXSW Interactive, in particular, focuses on topics such as emerging technologies, mobility, VR/AR, smart cities, urban planning, and much more.

This year, the conference begins on Friday, March 8 and ends on Sunday, March 17. We are excited by several sessions and topics covered in the Cities, Government & Politics Track, including sessions on mobility and urban planning (and how technology is changing the way we design and live in our cities). Here are just a few of the sessions that we’re looking forward to:

The Next Harvey: Predictive Flood Warning System

Francisco Sanchez is Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator for Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management. He will be presenting on the Regional Flood Warning System that incorporates live traffic and road conditions, rain, stream gages, and weather data to put safety alerting on phones, email, and websites. Survival of the Fittest: Mobility in Cities

City leaders and experts in transportation will discuss the strategies that are being used to create cleaner, safer, and more connected cities by increasing mobility for citizens. (more info)

Public/Private Collabs and the Future of Mobility

It’s not just up to cities and governments anymore. Private technology companies are increasingly impacting the way people get around their cities. This panel discussion will focus on current public/private collaborations that are happening now, and what we can learn from them. (more info)

Playable Cities: Why it Matters in Today’s Society

This session will discuss how we can create stimulating, creative outlets for social interaction and community activity by turning crosswalks, benches, building facades, sidewalks, and bus stops into PLAYces. (more info)

We hope to see you at some of these sessions and around Austin! Be sure to follow us on FacebookTwitterInstagram, or LinkedIn to stay up to date on what we’re seeing at SXSW 2019.
